Transmission problems scare many drivers as they imagine expensive repairs and days without their vehicle while it’s in the shop. In most situations, however, we can fix transmission issues quickly and inexpensively. As your Lincoln dealer, we want to tell you some signs that you need to visit us for a transmission service.

Signs You Need a Transmission Service at Your Lincoln Dealer

Burning Smells

Transmission fluid is vital for your transmission, providing the hydraulic power that allows the gears to shift. It also protects numerous components against friction damage by lubricating them and helps reduce the temperature inside the transmission. Like all fluids, transmission fluid gradually becomes less efficient and loses many of its properties as it ages.

Older fluid also loses its heat resistance. The heat inside the transmission rises as the fluid can’t effectively cool the hot components anymore, and the rising temperature can cause the fluid to overheat and burn. Burning transmission fluid produces a foul stench similar to burning rubber. We’ll flush your transmission to remove any trace of the old fluid and then replace it.

Thudding Noises

If you start hearing thudding noises when driving, you could have one or more damaged transmission mounts. There are two transmission mounts, and they connect the transmission to your Lincoln’s frame. The mounts are made from rubber and are filled with liquid to absorb and dissipate vibrations from the driving surface.

Over time, the rubber mounts become less flexible and can crack. If a mount cracks, the liquid inside it will leak out. Without the liquid, the mount can’t absorb vibrations, and the transmission will move as you drive, producing a thudding noise. The transmission can’t tear loose from the frame, but it will suffer damage without its vibration protection. We’ll replace one or both mounts to fix this problem.

Buzzing, Humming, or Whining

A healthy transmission doesn’t make any noise as it shifts gears. If you hear strange noises like buzzing or humming as the transmission works, you could have a transmission problem. These noises are slight when they start but will become louder as time passes. They can also morph into even stranger noises like clunking or whining.

One of the most common causes of strange transmission noises is a lack of transmission fluid. As we saw above, this fluid is essential for your transmission to work effectively. If you have a transmission leak, fluid will be lost and components will suffer damage. We’ll examine your transmission to find the leak site and then seal it. Once we replace the lost fluid, the strange noises will stop.

Transmission issues will worsen if they’re not repaired. Contact our service department today at Astro Lincoln in Pensacola, FL.
